Aeonium 'Zwartkop', also known as Black Rose, is an award-winning evergreen succulent shrub growing to around 100 cm tall and 60 cm wide with large rosettes 15 – 20 cm in diameter. During winter or when grown in shade, the rosettes are a deep red with a lime-green center, turning almost black when grown in the summer sun. It is extremely frost-hardy, requires very little care, and can be grown in a container or in the garden.
Originating from Madeira, the Canary Islands, and North Africa, this striking plant is versatile and adds appeal to any landscape. Aeonium 'Zwartkop' features long, bare branches that culminate in large rosettes showcasing an extraordinary color transformation depending on sunlight exposure.
In spring, Aeonium 'Zwartkop' produces bright yellow, star-shaped flowers that form large conical clusters on stalks rising from the center of mature rosettes. Following the bloom, these branches die back, making way for new growth.
