Aeonium 'Blushing Beauty'

Aeonium 'Blushing Beauty' is an award-winning hybrid Aeonium admired for its dense rosettes, softly textured foliage and beautiful seasonal transition from fresh green through bronze, red and purple tones. Its combination of reliable growth and changing colour has made it a long-established favourite among Aeonium growers.

Parentage & Related Cultivars

‘Blushing Beauty’ was bred by American hybridiser Jack Catlin from a cross between Aeonium canariense and Aeonium 'Zwartkop'. Another notable cultivar arising from the same cross is Aeonium 'Velour'. Although they share the same reported parentage, ‘Blushing Beauty’ and ‘Velour’ developed into distinctive selections with their own growth characteristics and appearance.

‘Blushing Beauty’ is also associated with the development of later ornamental forms. Aeonium 'Pink Witch' is widely reported in cultivation as having arisen from ‘Blushing Beauty’, although reliable formal documentation of its precise origin is limited. ‘Pink Witch’ subsequently became notable for its dramatically variegated pink foliage.

Colour & Growth

The plant forms branching stems topped by compact rosettes of broad, spoon-shaped leaves. Much of the foliage is green during active growth, developing increasingly pronounced bronze, burgundy, red and purple flushing in response to brighter light, cooler temperatures and seasonal conditions.

A fine pubescence gives the leaves their characteristic softly textured appearance. This subtle surface covering catches the light differently from the smooth, glossy foliage of many other Aeoniums and adds another dimension to the plant when viewed at close range.

Flowering

Mature Aeoniums may eventually produce an inflorescence carrying numerous small, star-shaped flowers. Individual rosettes are monocarpic and die after flowering, while non-flowering branches and rosettes continue growing, allowing an established multi-branched plant to persist.

Growing Conditions

‘Blushing Beauty’ performs well in pots or garden beds with excellent drainage. Bright light encourages compact growth and stronger seasonal colouring, although protection from severe afternoon summer sun can be beneficial in hotter Australian conditions.

Like other Aeoniums, it is predominantly a cool-season grower. Growth generally becomes more active through autumn, winter and spring before slowing during hot summer weather. Watering should follow the plant's growth cycle and local conditions rather than a fixed schedule, with the potting mix allowed to drain freely after watering.

Propagation

Propagation is readily achieved from stem cuttings. Allow the cut surface to dry and callous before planting into a free-draining succulent mix. Branching specimens can provide numerous propagation points as they mature.

Crested Form

Collectors interested in unusual growth forms may also enjoy Aeonium 'Blushing Beauty' Crest, in which the normal growing point has developed into a broad fasciated form, producing dense, sculptural growth rather than conventional individual rosettes.
