Aeonium 'Emerald Ice' is a captivating variegated succulent known for its stunning rosette form and striking contrast of colours. Discovered by renowned hybridiser Renee O’Connell in 2011, this unique cultivar originated in a commercial greenhouse in Vista, California, as a natural mutation within a batch of Aeonium 'Party Platter'. With its origins linked to Aeonium tabuliforme and Aeonium arboreum, it showcases some of the best features of both species—remarkable symmetry, architectural structure, and impressive variegation.
The defining feature of Aeonium 'Emerald Ice' is its mesmerising flattened rosette, growing up to 30 cm in diameter, with each leaf tapering to a gentle point that forms a star-like silhouette. The leaf surface is a vibrant emerald green, dramatically edged with creamy-white margins that intensify in brighter conditions. This crisp colour contrast gives the plant a fresh, polished appearance, making it a standout in any succulent collection or decorative garden arrangement.
Compact by nature, Aeonium 'Emerald Ice' remains a manageable size, typically reaching around 20 cm in height. It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun, producing its most vibrant colours during the cooler months. In the Australian climate, it prefers mild conditions, coping well with temperatures above 5°C but benefiting from protection during frosts or intense summer heatwaves.
Like many Aeonium varieties, it enjoys a well-draining soil mix and careful watering—allowing the soil to dry out between drinks prevents root rot. With a moderate growth rate and a habit of producing side offsets, it eventually forms attractive clusters, bringing year-round interest to potted displays, rockeries, or mixed succulent gardens. Its combination of bold colours and refined form makes it an eye-catching feature without overwhelming a space.
