Cotyledon eliseae is a charming and compact succulent shrublet endemic to the Schoemanspoort area in the Gouritz River valley of South Africa’s Little Karoo. It thrives in the unique quartzite sandstone cliffs of the region, where its adaptability to harsh conditions makes it a resilient addition to cultivated gardens. This species grows to a modest height of 20 cm, maintaining a neat, branched habit with glossy green, obovate leaves that measure up to 3.4 cm in length and 1.4 cm in width. The leaves are slightly convex, sticky to the touch, and feature a delicate reddish hue along their upper margins, adding a vibrant contrast.
The plant’s crowning glory is its profusion of bell-shaped, nodding flowers, which bloom in mid-summer. These orange-red blooms, perched on inflorescences up to 9 cm long, are not only striking but long-lasting, making Cotyledon eliseae one of the most floriferous members of its genus. Its compact growth and sticky leaves readily distinguish it from related species such as Cotyledon woodii.
In cultivation, this hardy species flourishes in well-drained, gritty soil and prefers bright light with ample airflow. It tolerates dry conditions exceptionally well, requiring careful watering to prevent root rot. While frost-sensitive, it can endure short periods of -5°C if kept dry. Be mindful, however, as it is toxic to humans and animals. Whether planted in a rockery, a sunny patio container, or a sheltered garden corner, Cotyledon eliseae offers a low-maintenance yet visually stunning display.
