Echinopsis denudata, commonly known as the sea-urchin cactus, is a small, globular spineless cactus from the family Cactaceae. Native to the rocky regions of South America, particularly Bolivia and Argentina, this cactus is celebrated for its beautiful white, nocturnal blooms that appear in late spring and summer. It has a spherical green body, usually covered with minimal spines or completely spineless, giving it a smooth, almost polished appearance.

This compact cactus grows to about 10 cm in diameter and features soft, white, hairy areoles that add texture to its green surface. The funnel-shaped flowers, which can reach 8 to 10cm in diameter, are its most striking feature, and their fragrant white petals often open in the evening, lasting only a day or two. This species is slow-growing, yet highly rewarding, typically blooming within its first few years of maturity.

Echinopsis denudata thrives in well-drained, sandy soil and requires minimal care. It is drought-tolerant, requiring water only when the soil has completely dried out. The plant enjoys bright, indirect light and can withstand temperatures as low as 5°C, though it’s best to keep it frost-free. Perfect for indoor pots or sunny outdoor gardens, this cactus adds a unique touch with its elegant, night-blooming flowers.
