Mammillaria matudae, commonly known as the Thumb Cactus, is a striking cactus species native to the mountainous regions of Mexico, particularly in Michoacán, State of Mexico, and Guerrero. This small, columnar cactus is prized for its unique appearance and vibrant magenta-pink flowers, which emerge during spring and summer. Its cylindrical stems are adorned with conical tubercles, densely covered in fine, white radial spines and a longer, reddish-brown central spine. The combination of these features gives the Thumb Cactus its distinctive, almost velvety texture.
Mammillaria matudae typically grows up to 30 cm in height and can produce offsets at its base, gradually forming a clumping habit. Over time, the plant tends to elongate and recline, giving it a sprawling appearance. The flowers, with their funnel-shaped petals, form a striking ring around the stem tips, creating an eye-catching halo effect that contrasts beautifully with its green fruit and reddish-tinted seeds.
Caring for Mammillaria matudae is straightforward, though it thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and well-draining soil. Watering should be done sparingly to prevent root rot, and the plant should be kept away from frost and excessive humidity. Repotting encourages healthy growth, more offsets, and increased flower production.
Listed as "subject to special protection" in Mexico, this cactus is not only a beautiful addition to any collection but also a rare species worthy of conservation efforts. With its minimal care requirements and vibrant blooms, Mammillaria matudae is a charming cactus for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
