Crassula ovata 'Crosby’s Compact' Variegata is a charming, slow-growing succulent cultivar prized for its compact form and striking foliage. A variegated selection of the well-known dwarf jade plant, this miniature version of Crassula ovata likely originated as a sport or mutation of the 'Crosby’s Compact' cultivar, itself a dwarf form of the classic jade plant native to South Africa and Mozambique. Its reduced size and colourful leaves make it especially desirable for container growing, small garden beds, and bonsai-style cultivation.

This variety features tight branching and a shrubby, upright habit, with glossy, obovate leaves in shades of green and yellow. Leaf margins are often tinged with red, intensifying to vivid tones across the entire leaf surface when grown in bright sunlight. Mature plants can reach around 60 to 90 cm in height and develop a sturdy, tree-like silhouette. In late autumn to winter, mature specimens may produce small, star-shaped flowers in soft white or pale pink, held in delicate clusters near the tips of the branches.

Crassula ovata 'Crosby’s Compact' Variegata prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in well-drained soil, such as a gritty cactus mix. It's drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering once established—let the soil dry completely between waterings. Although resilient, it is frost-tender and best protected during cold snaps below −2 °C, particularly in southern Australian climates. Its ornamental appeal and ease of care make it a popular choice for collectors and beginners alike. However, like other Crassulas, it is considered toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
