About Graptopetalum ‘Ellen’ Variegated
Graptopetalum ‘Ellen’ Variegated, also known as Graptopetalum ‘Daruma Shu-rei’ Variegata, is a highly attractive variegated succulent admired for its plump, powdery foliage and beautiful pastel colouring. The compact rosettes combine soft grey-green tones with creamy white to pale yellow variegation, often developing delicate pink, peach and mauve shades under brighter light and cooler conditions.
Individual rosettes can reach around 8 cm in diameter, although size will vary with growing conditions. As the plant matures it develops additional growth and gradually forms an attractive multi-headed specimen, with the stems capable of taking on a gently spreading or trailing habit. This makes it particularly appealing in pots, succulent arrangements and displays where its pastel foliage can be appreciated.
Growing from a Cutting
Growing Graptopetalum ‘Ellen’ Variegated from a cutting is an economical and rewarding way to add this collectable variety to your succulent collection. Graptopetalum generally establish readily from healthy stem cuttings, and watching a single cutting produce roots, new growth and additional rosettes is part of their appeal.
Once the cut end has dried and calloused, plant into a free-draining succulent mix and keep the cutting in bright, protected light. Water sparingly and allow the growing medium to dry between waterings. As the plant develops, gradually increasing light will help maintain compact growth and encourage stronger pastel colouring.
Colour & Care
Bright light helps maintain compact growth and encourages the strongest pastel colouring, while cooler conditions can intensify the attractive pink and mauve tones. Because the pale variegated sections contain less chlorophyll, some protection from harsh afternoon summer sun is beneficial, particularly during very hot Australian weather.
Once established, Graptopetalum ‘Ellen’ Variegated is relatively low maintenance and drought tolerant. Mature plants may also produce clusters of small star-shaped flowers during the warmer growing season, adding another feature to this already distinctive succulent.
With its soft variegation, changing seasonal colours and ease of propagation, Graptopetalum ‘Ellen’ Variegated is an excellent choice for collectors as well as growers who enjoy establishing beautiful succulents from cuttings.
