Echeveria ‘Blue Surprise’ Monstrose is a rare and highly collectible variation of the classic Blue Surprise hybrid, originally derived from Echeveria lilacina and Echeveria elegans. Unlike the standard symmetrical rosette, this monstrose form develops with irregular, distorted growth, giving each plant a truly unique and sculptural appearance.

Rather than forming a neat, uniform rosette, it typically grows as a solitary head with gently irregular shaping. The fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves retain the soft, powdery tones this variety is known for—shifting between blue-grey, lilac and blush pink depending on light levels and seasonal conditions. Under bright light or mild stress, these pastel hues intensify, creating a subtle yet eye-catching display.

The appeal of Blue Surprise Monstrose lies in its individuality. Each plant develops its own character over time, with slight variations in form and colour that make it a standout piece in any succulent collection. Its slower, more deliberate growth habit adds to its value, rewarding patient growers with a distinctive and refined specimen.

This variety thrives in full sun to partial sun and is well suited to Australian conditions. Like most echeverias, it prefers a well-draining succulent mix and benefits from allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Its compact size makes it ideal for pots, small arrangements, or as a feature plant where its unusual form can be appreciated up close.

Also known as “Andrew’s Choice,” this hybrid has gained popularity through tissue culture and remains a sought-after plant among collectors for its soft colouring and now, in this rare monstrose form, its unique growth habit.

In summary, Echeveria ‘Blue Surprise’ Monstrose offers a beautiful balance of pastel colour and natural irregularity, making it a subtle yet highly desirable addition to any succulent collection.
