Graptopetalum 'Claret' is a stunning succulent hybrid that is a lovely addition for any succulent lover in Australia. This plant is a result of a cross between two Graptopetalum species, possibly Graptopetalum amethystinum and Graptopetalum rusbyi. Its flowers are a clear indication that it is a hybrid of two Graptopetalum species.

The plant has branched stems that are covered with colorful rhombic leaves clustered in rosettes at the end of the branches. These leaves have a whitish bloom and are initially rose-colored, later turning grey-green or beige. However, when grown in full sun and drought conditions, the leaves show the color of red wine, hence the name "Claret." The plant can grow up to 10 cm tall, and the stems can be erect, decumbent, or pendent. The star-shaped flowers are white with dark red markings and appear in clusters on simple leafy stalks in spring or summer.

Graptopetalum 'Claret' thrives in sunlight, so it is best to choose a location where it will receive full sun. However, it will also grow in partial shade with slightly rangy results. The plant needs good drainage to maintain a healthy root system, so when growing it in a pot, choose a well-drained soil mix and a pot with drainage holes.

When watering this plant, ensure that the soil is allowed to dry out completely before watering again. In summer, water the plant once a week, but in spring and fall, cut back to watering every 10 to 14 days. In winter, water the plant just enough to keep it from shriveling. Applying fertilizer during the active growing season promotes healthy growth, including flower production.

Graptopetalum 'Claret' can tolerate temperatures as low as -1.1 ° C, making it suitable for most areas in Australia. It is best suited for areas with warm summers and mild winters, and can thrive in both coastal and inland regions. It is a low-maintenance plant that can handle periods of drought, but it is important to protect it from frost during winter.

Graptopetalum 'Claret' does not need frequent repotting, but when it has outgrown its container, repot it in a fresh potting mix in a new pot slightly larger than the old one. The easiest way to propagate this plant is through stem cuttings, but it also easily propagates from leaf cuttings.

In conclusion, Graptopetalum 'Claret' is an easy-to-care-for plant that will thrive in a sunny location in well-drained soil. Its wine-red color and star-shaped flowers make it a unique addition to any succulent collection. Whether you are a seasoned plant parent or a beginner, this hybrid is an excellent choice for any succulent enthusiast in Australia, particularly those in regions with warm summers and mild winters.
