Crassula pubescens is a compact, branching succulent native to South Africa's Cape region, distinguished by its softly hairy foliage and attractive seasonal colouring. The species develops into low, spreading clumps, with fleshy leaves covered in fine hairs that give the plant a soft, silvery or velvety appearance.

Softly pubescent foliage

The leaves are typically oblanceolate to obovate, approximately 10–30 mm long, and range from green and grey-green to deep red or burgundy. The fine covering of hairs, known botanically as pubescence, is responsible for both the species name and its distinctive texture. Strong light and cooler or drier seasonal conditions can intensify the red and burgundy tones, while plants in active growth may remain considerably greener.

Compact, branching growth

Crassula pubescens forms a much-branched succulent shrublet, generally remaining around 10–30 cm high. Leaves are concentrated towards the ends of the stems and can create loosely defined rosettes as the plant develops. Its naturally compact habit makes it particularly effective in pots, rockeries and mixed succulent plantings.

Cream to yellow flowers

Mature plants produce upright flower stems carrying dense clusters of very small cream to pale yellow flowers. The individual flowers are tubular, with petals partly fused towards the base and distinctive small appendages near their tips. Although each flower is only a few millimetres long, the clustered inflorescences stand prominently above the dark, textured foliage.

Growing Crassula pubescens

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Strong light encourages compact growth and richer foliage colour, although plants should be gradually acclimatised before exposure to intense Australian summer sun. Water thoroughly when required, then allow the growing medium to dry between waterings. Reduce watering during cool or slow-growing periods and avoid keeping the roots continuously wet.
