Sedum dasyphyllum var. glanduliferum, commonly known as 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Sedum' or the Hairy Form, is a distinctive low-growing stonecrop characterised by its tiny, plump leaves covered in fine hairs. The closely packed foliage develops along freely branching stems, gradually forming dense, softly textured mats that can spread across the ground or trail attractively over the edges of containers. Growing much wider than it is tall, it is particularly well suited to rockeries, alpine-style gardens, fairy gardens, hanging baskets and mixed succulent arrangements.
Distinctive fuzzy foliage and seasonal colour
The fine hairs covering the leaves give Fuzzy Wuzzy Sedum a noticeably different texture from the smoother-leaved forms of Sedum dasyphyllum. The foliage is typically glaucous grey to blue-grey, but its colouring can change considerably with the seasons and growing conditions. Shades of blue, lilac, mauve and pink can develop under brighter light, cooler temperatures or drier conditions, while plants in active growth tend to display greener tones.
The combination of tiny rounded leaves, fine hairs and changing pastel colours gives established plants a soft appearance when viewed as a dense mat. The trailing stems also make this form particularly effective near the edge of a pot, where they can gradually spread and cascade down the sides.
Flowers
Small star-shaped flowers are produced above the foliage during the flowering season, adding another layer of interest to the plant. As with the foliage, flowering time can vary with climate and growing conditions.
A vigorous spreading groundcover
Sedum dasyphyllum var. glanduliferum can spread readily when conditions suit it. Stems root where they come into contact with suitable growing media, while individual leaves that detach from the plant are capable of producing roots and developing into new plants.
We have seen just how effectively this can happen in our own nursery. Fallen leaves established themselves directly on the weed mat beneath one of our benches, where the combination of warmth, bright indirect light and occasional moisture suited them remarkably well. Left undisturbed, they gradually developed into a mat approximately a metre across within a couple of years. It is a good example of this Sedum's ability to propagate and spread from even very small pieces.
Growing Fuzzy Wuzzy Sedum
Grow in a free-draining succulent or cactus mix in a bright position with good airflow. It performs well in bright light to full sun, although some protection from intense afternoon sun can be beneficial during periods of extreme Australian summer heat, particularly for plants grown in small containers.
Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings and avoid prolonged wet or waterlogged conditions. Once established, the fleshy foliage provides good drought tolerance, although occasional watering during extended dry periods will help maintain healthy growth. Good drainage is particularly important during cool or wet weather.
Easy to propagate
Fuzzy Wuzzy Sedum can be propagated readily from stem cuttings, division or individual leaves. Stem pieces can be placed onto or lightly pressed into free-draining succulent mix, where they will often develop roots from points in contact with the growing medium. Fallen leaves can also produce new plants, making this one of those succulents where pieces accidentally detached during handling need not be wasted.

Please Note: This plant is fragile. Its leaves dislodge easily when handled or knocked, so expect some fallen leaves in your package when you receive it. The leaves propagate very easily, so simply place them on some suitable potting mix and allow them to develop into new plants.
