Sempervivum ‘Hairy Grey’ is a charming perennial succulent that forms compact, ball-shaped rosettes covered in a fine, silvery-white fuzz. Belonging to the long-cultivated genus Sempervivum, native to the rocky alpine slopes of southern Europe, this hardy variety has evolved to thrive in tough conditions where excellent drainage and resilience are essential. Its fleshy, lance-shaped leaves are a cool grey-green, and under bright sunlight or seasonal changes, they may develop deeper, sometimes burgundy tones that highlight the plant’s unique character.
The soft “hairy” coating is more than ornamental—it helps protect the rosettes from excessive sun exposure and moisture, while giving the plant its velvety, eye-catching texture. Over time, Sempervivum ‘Hairy Grey’ multiplies freely by offsets, forming dense clusters that spread into a natural carpet of rosettes. This makes it an ideal choice for rock gardens, gravel beds, alpine displays, and container planting, especially in smaller garden spaces.
Highly resilient and drought-tolerant once established, this cultivar is well-suited to Australian gardens. It flourishes in full sun to part shade, provided it is planted in free-draining soil to prevent root rot. Watering should be minimal—allow the soil to dry completely before re-watering. In summer, mature rosettes may send up a tall flower stalk topped with star-shaped pink blossoms. After flowering, the main rosette dies back, but is quickly replaced by its surrounding offsets, ensuring the colony’s continual renewal.
With its unique texture, subtle colour shifts, and low-maintenance growth habit, Sempervivum ‘Hairy Grey’ offers year-round interest and durability, making it a standout feature in any succulent collection or outdoor landscape.
