Adromischus maculatus is a charming, compact succulent from South Africa’s Western and Eastern Cape regions, where it clings to sandstone slopes in the Langeberg Mountains. This distinctive species of the Crassulaceae family is commonly known as Mottled Pig’s Ears, Calico Hearts, or Chocolate Drop, names that reflect its beautifully patterned foliage and warm-toned leaves.

This slow-growing perennial forms small clusters of fleshy, wedge-shaped leaves that vary from glossy green to greyish brown, often adorned with marbled chocolate-brown spots that give each plant a unique appearance. Under bright light or full sun, the leaves can take on deep scarlet hues, adding to its ornamental value. Mature plants reach about 35 cm high, with woody stems that may sprawl slightly as the plant matures.

In summer (December to January in Australia), Adromischus maculatus produces slender flower stalks up to 35 cm tall, topped with tubular pale green to white blooms lightly tinged pink or mauve. While small, these delicate flowers are a lovely contrast to the thick foliage. In habitat, the plant is pollinated by native bees, and like other members of its genus, may attract protective ants drawn to its nectar.

A perfect succulent for collectors and beginners alike, Adromischus maculatus thrives in bright light and well-drained, gritty soil. It’s best grown in small pots, rockeries, or arid garden beds where rainfall is low. Overwatering should be avoided—use the “soak and dry” method, letting the soil dry completely between waterings.

Propagation is simple from individual leaves, though patience is key as new growth is slow to form. With its unusual patterns and compact habit, Adromischus maculatus makes a delightful addition to any indoor display or drought-tolerant garden, capturing the subtle beauty of South Africa’s fynbos flora.
