Adromischus trigynus

Adromischus trigynus, commonly known as Calico Hearts, is a compact southern African succulent with thick grey-green leaves patterned with irregular burgundy to deep purple markings. The combination of pale foliage, dense spotting and contrasting darker margins can become particularly pronounced under brighter growing conditions.

Compact, Mottled Foliage

The fleshy leaves are closely arranged on short branches and are generally elliptic to broadly obovate, often with a slightly concave upper surface and more rounded underside. Individual leaves typically remain relatively small, reaching approximately 3 cm long, while their markings vary considerably from fine spotting to extensive dark mottling.

Foliage colour also changes with season, light and growing conditions. Plants may appear predominantly grey-green during periods of softer growth, while stronger light can encourage deeper burgundy and purplish pigmentation across the leaves and margins.

Growth & Flowers

Adromischus trigynus is naturally dwarf and slow growing, developing short branches from a thickened base and gradually forming a compact cluster. Mature plants generally remain relatively low, broadening gradually as additional branches develop.

In late spring and summer, established plants can produce slender upright flower stems considerably taller than the foliage. The small tubular flowers are pale yellow-green towards the base, with off-white to pinkish colouring towards the lobes.

A Southern African Species

Adromischus trigynus is an accepted botanical species native to Namibia and South Africa, including the Cape Provinces and Free State. It occurs naturally in dry areas of southern Africa, including sheltered rocky habitats and crevices.

The species is sometimes confused in cultivation with Adromischus maculatus because both can develop grey-green foliage with dark purple to burgundy markings. They are distinct species, with A. trigynus generally producing smaller leaves as well as differing in floral characteristics.

Growing Adromischus trigynus

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and can encourage stronger burgundy and purplish foliage colouring, although plants should be acclimatised gradually before exposure to intense direct sun.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cooler conditions. The thick succulent leaves provide substantial water storage, allowing established plants to tolerate periods of dryness.

Please note: From our experience growing, handling and shipping this variety of Adromischus, we consider it well suited to shipping. However, individual leaves can occasionally detach if the plant is physically disturbed during transit or unpacking. A small amount of leaf drop can therefore occur and does not in itself indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

In the wild, leaf detachment and subsequent rooting is a natural means of vegetative reproduction in Adromischus, helping the plants reproduce and persist in their natural habitat. If leaves become detached from your plant, simply lay the healthy leaves on the surface of a free-draining succulent mix in bright, protected light. New roots and shoots will often develop from the base of the leaf over the following weeks. Once roots and new growth begin to develop, gently nestle them into the growing medium and allow the new plant to establish.
