Aeonium Mardi Gras
Aeonium 'Mardi Gras' is a spectacular variegated Aeonium celebrated for its constantly changing display of green, cream, pink, red and burgundy. Vigorous yet relatively compact, it combines bold seasonal colour with a naturally branching habit that becomes increasingly impressive as the plant matures.
Origin & Parentage
'Mardi Gras' was selected by succulent breeder Renee O'Connell from a hybrid she made in 2007. One parent was Aeonium 'Velour', while the other was an unnamed hybrid with additional Aeonium cultivars in its ancestry.
The result is a distinctive tricoloured cultivar that combines vigorous growth with remarkably decorative variegation.
Seasonal Colour
The rosettes feature broad areas of green and cream, often edged and flushed with pink, red or deep burgundy. Their appearance can change dramatically with season, light, temperature and growing conditions, so the same plant may look noticeably different at various times of year.
Good light generally encourages stronger colour and a more compact form. During periods of active growth the foliage may become fresher and greener, while brighter conditions can intensify the contrasting pink and burgundy margins.
Growth Habit
'Mardi Gras' forms branching stems topped with attractive rosettes that can reach around 15 cm or more across under favourable conditions. Additional rosettes develop as the plant branches, gradually creating an attractive small shrub with a layered, multi-headed appearance.
Growing Conditions
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in bright light. Morning sun with some protection from intense summer afternoon sun is particularly useful in hotter Australian conditions, especially for variegated foliage, which can be more susceptible to scorching.
Water according to growth and weather rather than following a rigid schedule. Aeoniums generally grow most actively through the cooler months and slow down during hot summer conditions. Allow excess water to drain freely and reduce watering when the plant becomes less active.
Propagation
'Mardi Gras' can be propagated from stem cuttings and offsets. Because it is a named variegated cultivar, vegetative propagation is used to preserve its characteristic foliage and growth habit rather than relying on seed.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
