Aeonium spathulatum Variegated is an intriguing and rare cultivar, characterized by its striking canary yellow variegation that sets it apart from its non-variegated counterpart. Originating from the Canary Islands, this plant is a variegated form of Aeonium spathulatum, known for its compact growth habit. The intense variegation not only enhances its visual appeal but also results in a smaller growth habit, making it particularly desirable for bonsai enthusiasts.
This succulent forms densely branched, spoon-shaped leaves arranged in tight rosettes at the ends of its branches. The rosettes, with their green and yellow-streaked leaves, develop a reddish tint when exposed to bright light. The leaf margins are adorned with bead-shaped cilia, and the lower surface of the leaves features distinctive brownish tannic stripes, adding to the plant's unique texture.
Flowering typically occurs within a few years, with star-shaped, yellow flowers tinged with red, blooming in clusters on leafy stalks. These flowers create a striking contrast with the plant’s variegated foliage, further enhancing its ornamental value.
Given its compact size and slow growth rate, Aeonium spathulatum Variegated is well-suited to partial shade, particularly during hot Australian summers. It thrives in well-draining soil with some moisture retention, making it a beautiful, low-maintenance addition to any succulent collection. As the plant is still relatively new, its ultimate size is yet to be determined, but it is likely to remain small and manageable, perfect for creating a unique, miniature landscape.
