Aeonium 'Sunburst Crest'

Aeonium 'Sunburst Crest', also known as Aeonium 'Sunburst' Cristata, combines the beautiful green, cream and pink variegation of 'Sunburst' with the extraordinary sculptural growth created by cresting.

What Makes Sunburst Crest Different?

Instead of developing from a conventional single growing point, the stem becomes broadened and flattened through a natural growth phenomenon known as fasciation. Multiple growing points then develop along this expanded crest, producing a dense and often unpredictable arrangement of leaves and small rosettes.

Every specimen develops differently. Crests can curve, fold and broaden as they mature, gradually creating a living sculptural form quite unlike a normal Aeonium rosette.

Connection to Aeonium 'Sunburst'

This is the crested form of Aeonium 'Sunburst'. Both display similar green and creamy-yellow variegation with pink to copper margins, but ordinary 'Sunburst' produces large conventional rosettes while the crested form concentrates its growth along flattened, fan-like stems.

Crested plants can occasionally produce a normal non-crested shoot. This is a natural characteristic of fasciated plants rather than a problem with the specimen.

Seasonal Colour

The foliage combines green with cream to pale yellow variegation, while good light can bring out attractive pink tones around the margins. Colour varies according to season and growing conditions, giving the crest additional depth as new growth develops.

Growing Conditions

Grow in a bright position in a free-draining succulent mix. Because the pale variegated foliage is more susceptible to scorching, protection from severe Australian summer afternoon sun may be beneficial, particularly for plants moving from sheltered conditions into stronger light.

Water thoroughly when required during active cooler-season growth, allowing excess moisture to drain freely. Reduce watering during hot periods when growth slows, and avoid allowing moisture to remain trapped around the dense crested growth.

A Living Sculptural Succulent

With age, 'Sunburst Crest' can become an increasingly elaborate specimen. The combination of fasciated growth, variegated foliage and seasonal pink colouring makes each plant genuinely individual and especially interesting for collectors of unusual succulent forms.
