Crassula capitella ssp thyrsiflora variegated, also known as Variegated Pyramid Plant, shows her best colours when kept well hydrated and grown in full sun for most of the year, but should be protected from hot afternoon sun in summer to help maintain well-defined variegation. She looks especially beautiful during autumn, winter and spring, like a proud new mum showing off her new baby pagodas, which appear soon after flowering.
New pagodas after flowering
The new pagoda heads form quite quickly after cutting back the flower stems, redirecting the plant's energy back into foliage growth and producing many fresh new pagodas. You can cut the flower stems back a little early if you like. It won't harm the plant, although if all of them are removed too early the plant may produce a second flowering.
The flowers are beautiful in themselves, but this plant is particularly valued for its delicate, neatly stacked pagoda heads and lovely range of colours. Each plant has a striking uniqueness, unlike many other species where one plant can look much the same as the next.
Changing colour through the seasons
Fresh growth produced during the shorter days can emerge a very light pink, gradually deepening to the stronger pink tones shown in the images. Green, pink and burgundy can contrast beautifully together, with the balance of colour changing according to season and growing conditions.
The regular form, Crassula capitella ssp. thyrsiflora, commonly known as Red Pagoda or Pyramid Plant, is naturally compact and can eventually trail over the edge of a pot. The variegated form shares this characteristic growth habit but is slower growing, with the additional cream, pink and burgundy colouring giving it a very different appearance.
Growing Crassula capitella ssp thyrsiflora variegated
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light to maintain compact growth and strong colour. It needs relatively little room to grow and can handle extended dry periods once established. Colour generally becomes stronger with increased light, while plants can become greener when well watered and actively growing.
Avoid overfeeding, as excessive fertiliser can encourage softer, greener growth at the expense of the compact form and stronger colour. In our nursery, flowering generally occurs in late summer to autumn here in Victoria. Cutting the flower stems back soon after flowering encourages fresh foliage growth, and we are often rewarded with numerous new pagoda heads from mid-autumn through spring before the next flowering cycle.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
