Crassula plegmatoides, formerly known as Crassula arta, is a small succulent plant with unique columnar growth habit. Native to a narrow coastal strip in South Africa and Namibia, it grows on gentle slopes and rocky areas usually associated with quartzite gravel. The plant forms compact, fat, velvety columns up to 15 cm tall, with gray or gray-green leaves closely clasping around the stem. The leaves are fleshy, broadly ovate, and covered with spherical papillae, giving them a distinct texture. In late summer or autumn, it produces small round-topped clusters of tubular cream-colored flowers that fade to brown.
Crassula plegmatoides is adapted to the extremely dry coastal areas and is opportunistic in its growth, taking advantage of any available water. It is a winter rainfall area, but never freezing since it grows at sea level. It prefers well-draining soil and bright, indirect light.
This plant is often mistaken for Crassula deceptor, but it is easily distinguished by the adpressed apex of the leaves. It is a great addition to any succulent collection, and its unique growth habit and texture make it a fascinating plant to observe. If you are looking for a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant that can add interest to your garden or indoor space, consider adding Crassula plegmatoides to your collection.
Crassula plegmatoides will typically lay over when it gets taller so it is good to grow it in a shallow wide pot as shown. It has a shallow root system and doesn't like over watering. This plant will form new roots where it lays on the soil and throw up lots of new lateral shoots giving it a more pleasing effect than trying to grow it upright which is near impossible unless it is staked.
In our display image you will see we have companion planted a Cremnosedum 'Little Gem' which compliments our Crassula plegmatoides and will stay small and compact leaving Crassula plegmatoides the centre of attraction.
