Crassula quadrangularis is a captivating miniature succulent that draws attention with its unique, architectural form. Commonly called the Pagoda Mini Jade, this slow-growing species belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is native to the sheltered rock crevices and cliffs of South Africa, where it has evolved to withstand harsh sun and irregular rainfall. Its most distinctive feature is its sharply angled, four-sided stems that rise like tiny columns, creating a striking geometric structure that adds a sculptural quality to any container or rock garden.
Each stem is lined with tiny, dark green leaves arranged so closely that they appear to interlock like roof tiles, forming a cross-shaped pattern when viewed from above. These thick, fleshy leaves are adept at storing water, making Crassula quadrangularis highly drought tolerant. In spring, it produces a delicate display of star-shaped flowers in pale yellow or greenish-white, a charming contrast to its bold, angular foliage.
Ideal for a bright position with indirect or filtered sun, this species benefits from some protection during the hottest part of the afternoon to prevent leaf scorch. It grows best in well-draining soil, allowing the roots to dry out completely between waterings, as overwatering can quickly lead to root rot. Crassula quadrangularis thrives in temperatures between 18–25 °C and will tolerate cooler conditions down to roughly 5 °C if kept dry, making it well-suited for many Australian climates. Its compact growth and intriguing form make it an excellent choice for a windowsill, a shallow dish garden, or an alpine-style planting. Its timeless beauty and resilience have made it a cherished addition to succulent collections worldwide.
