Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' Crest
Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' Crested is the extremely rare fasciated form of the classic Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony'. Instead of developing the symmetrical single rosette of the regular form, the growing point becomes elongated and produces a broad, irregular crest lined with tightly packed leaves. Stock is very limited and we are only occasionally able to offer established crested plants for sale.
Rare Crested Growth
Cresting, or fasciation, alters the normal growing point of the plant, causing growth to develop along an elongated line rather than from a single central point. As the crest matures it can broaden considerably, producing folds, curves and multiple irregular sections that continue to change shape with age. No two mature crests develop in exactly the same way.
The characteristic foliage of 'Ebony' is retained, with thick green to grey-green leaves developing deep burgundy, purplish-brown to almost black margins and tips. Strong light and cooler conditions can intensify this pigmentation, creating a particularly strong contrast between the green centre of the leaves and their dark outer edges.
Slow Growth Produces the Best Crests
In our experience, Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' Crested is at its best when grown slowly. A mature crest becomes increasingly broad and top-heavy, so developing strong, compact supporting growth is particularly important. Plants grown steadily under plenty of light produce a denser, sturdier crest with better form and stronger colour.
Excessive nitrogen should be avoided. Pushing a crest into rapid, soft growth can produce elongated, weak tissue that lacks the strength to support the increasingly heavy upper growth. Poorly developed crests can eventually become unstable under their own weight. Slow, firm growth is preferable to rapid enlargement and produces a much better long-term specimen.
The Crested Form of a Classic Echeveria
The regular Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' is a long-established cultivar formally published by Myron Kimnach and John Trager in 1992. The crested form retains the cultivar's characteristic dark pigmentation but expresses it through fasciated growth rather than the conventional symmetrical rosette.
Because this form is produced and propagated in much smaller numbers than regular 'Ebony', established crested plants remain exceptionally scarce in our nursery and are not regularly available.
Growing Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' Crested
Grow 'Ebony' Crested slowly in a free-draining succulent mix with good airflow and plenty of light. Strong light helps keep the crest dense and compact while encouraging the deep burgundy to almost black pigmentation characteristic of 'Ebony'. Plants should be acclimatised gradually before being moved into substantially stronger sunlight.
Avoid rich growing media and excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft, elongated growth. Allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings and take particular care to avoid prolonged moisture remaining within the densely packed folds of an established crest.
Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' Crested plants for sale shown in 70mm pots. You will receive same or similar plants as those shown in images. Colours will vary depending on time of year and growing conditions.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
