Echeveria bicolor var. bicolor is a stunning succulent with green, glossy leaves arranged in loose terminal rosettes that can grow up to 7 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. The leaves have a shallow longitudinal groove or concavity above, and are never more than slightly glaucous. The plant can grow up to 50 cm tall and often has a low branch or two. It is native to Venezuela and northern Colombia, and can be found primarily at relatively lower elevations of around 1,000 to 1,500 m asl.
The inflorescences of Echeveria bicolor var. bicolor have green bracts that can grow up to 25 mm long and 8 mm wide, with shorter pedicels of 3-4 mm long seated directly in the axils of their subtending bracts. The flowers have nearly equal, widely spreading sepals that are about 8 mm long. The corolla is about 10 mm long with tips that spread 7 to 9 mm apart, and is mostly yellow but flushed outside with variable amounts of red.
Echeveria bicolor var. bicolor is one of many Echeveria species found in Venezuela, and while several more species may occur there, little research has been undertaken to confirm this. The plant is often confused with E. subspicata, which is only known from dried material collected in Colombia at a height of 5,800 m asl, while E. bicolor is from much lower elevations.
Overall, Echeveria bicolor var. bicolor is a beautiful and unique succulent with striking two-colored flowers and an attractive growth habit.
