Echeveria 'Katella' is a captivating hybrid created by the renowned breeder Dick Wright in 1962, named after the Katella Avenue near his home in California. This exquisite echeveria is a cross of exceptionally large and fleshy Echeveria gibbiflora plants, sourced from esteemed horticulturists Mrs. Gladdys Axcel of Torrance, California, and Professor H. Butterfield. Its impressive heritage lends to its vibrant character and unique appeal.
The plant forms a rosette of bright green foliage that develops striking red edges when exposed to sunlight or cooler temperatures. As it matures, its older leaves may become slightly ruffled, enhancing its ornamental value. With adequate light exposure, the vivid green deepens, and the red margins intensify, creating a dramatic display. Winter stress can further heighten its colours, making it a stunning focal point in any collection.
Echeveria 'Katella' thrives in well-draining soil and prefers a sunny position to achieve its best form. While drought-tolerant, regular deep watering and occasional fertilising will encourage more robust growth and colour vibrancy. Suitable for Australian gardens and collections, it is an excellent choice for both container displays and rockeries, bringing texture and charm to any space.
