Euphorbia flanaganii, captivatingly known as Medusa's Head, offers an exotic touch to any plant collection. Originating from the coastal belts of South Africa's Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, this dwarf succulent weaves a spell with its snake-like branches radiating from a central caudex, akin to the serpentine locks of the mythical Medusa.
The plant's architecture is visually enchanting. Euphorbia flanaganii features a caudex at the center from which cylindrical branches extend, lying flat on the ground. These branches can span up to 40 cm in diameter. Tiny leaves measuring up to 10 mm long adorn the stems, manifesting in a linear to acute shape. The succulent further punctuates its beauty with clusters of yellow cyathia that appear mainly in summer, crowning the plant's central apex.
Hardiness is a feature worth noting for Australian gardeners. This species thrives in hot, humid climates and prefers locations with abundant sunlight, requiring at least 6 hours of direct exposure daily. However, it lacks frost resistance, making it suitable for zones where freezing temperatures are not a concern.
Contrary to most succulents, the Medusa's Head does not appreciate long spells of drought. During the summer months, weekly watering may be necessary, as signaled by the inward curling of its arms. A well-drained soil or potting mix provides the ideal growing medium. Although it can endure a bit more water compared to your average cacti or succulents, over-watering should be avoided to prevent root rot.
Propagation of Euphorbia flanaganii is notably fascinating. Mature plants produce "pups" at the ends of older branches. These growths eventually develop their own caudex and arms, and if not rooted naturally, they detach and roll away to grow independently if given access to soil and water.
A word of caution: the latex sap of this Euphorbia is toxic, necessitating immediate washing upon skin contact. This feature is common among Euphorbias, many of which are used for medicinal purposes in their native regions.
While Euphorbia flanaganii enchants as an ornamental spectacle, it carries a vulnerable conservation status, mainly due to habitat loss and medicinal harvesting. Thus, each Medusa's Head nurtured in a garden or container contributes to preserving this marvelous species for future generations to admire.
