I already have a couple of these cacti and would totally recommend it. It is strong, healthy and doesn’t seem to ever attract any pests or disease.
Haworthiopsis coarctata, formerly known as Haworthia coarctata, is a distinctive South African succulent with firm, pointed leaves covered in small whitish tubercles. The form offered here develops relatively open rosettes and produces offsets freely, gradually forming rounded clusters.
Choose a Developing Cluster, with a well-grown main rosette and young offsets emerging, or a Mature Cluster, with a fuller group of established rosettes. Please select your preferred option from the menu above the “Add to Cart” button. The images associated with each option show typical plants of that form; the number and arrangement of rosettes will vary naturally.
Haworthiopsis coarctata varies considerably in growth habit. Some forms develop tightly stacked leaves on lengthening stems, producing the column-like growth often associated with the species. The form offered in this listing remains relatively open and branches strongly from around the base, developing outwards into broad clusters.
Individual rosettes may gain some height with age, but these plants do not normally develop the tall, narrow columns seen in other cultivated forms. Their generous production of offsets is one of the qualities that makes them especially rewarding to grow.
The firm, pointed leaves range from fresh to deep green and carry numerous raised whitish tubercles. These fine markings give every rosette a distinctive spotted texture that becomes increasingly striking as the plant fills out.
Stronger light or drier conditions may bring out bronze and reddish-brown tones. Plants in gentler light generally remain greener. While some bronzing is a natural response, dry brown leaf tips can indicate that conditions are becoming too hot, sunny or dry.
A Developing Cluster offers the pleasure of watching new pups emerge and gradually fill the pot. A Mature Cluster provides an immediate, substantial display of overlapping rosettes. Our mature specimens have been grown for around two years and have reached a stage where they can be enjoyed as full clusters or divided for propagation.
Offsets can be left attached as the plant continues to develop. When a cluster becomes crowded, established pups may be separated and repotted, giving you more plants while allowing the original specimen room to grow.
This is one of the succulents we particularly recommend for a bright indoor position. To assess its performance, we selected two plants from our nursery stock and have grown them on an east-facing windowsill in Victoria for around two years. Both have steadily produced offsets and formed attractive clusters with very little attention.
They receive approximately one to two hours of gentle early-morning sun, followed by indirect natural light for the rest of the day. Despite receiving substantially less light than our nursery plants, they have shown very little stretching. Their leaves have grown slightly longer, while the plants have retained an appealing, naturally clustered form.
Apart from some slow-release fertiliser when first potted, we have allowed these indoor plants to grow slowly in the same pots. They have simply become larger and fuller over time. For a well-lit windowsill, this is a variety we can recommend from our own growing experience.
Haworthiopsis coarctata was formerly classified as Haworthia coarctata and is still often found under that name. Native to South Africa’s Cape Provinces, it is a variable species with several forms in cultivation. The plants offered here are sold as Haworthiopsis coarctata, without an assignment to a particular botanical variety.
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with good airflow. Our nursery plants receive bright, protected light, which helps maintain the green foliage and compact growth shown in the sale images. This form also adapts well to bright indirect or filtered light and does not need prolonged direct sun to grow successfully.
Acclimatise plants gradually if moving them into a brighter position. Protect them from intense direct sun and heat during Australian summers, particularly if you wish to maintain green, plump foliage and undamaged leaf tips.
Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet, especially indoors, where pots may dry more slowly. Heavy feeding is unnecessary; moderate nutrition supports steady, compact growth. Mature plants may produce slender flower stems carrying numerous small, pale flowers.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
