Haworthiopsis limifolia, formerly known as Haworthia limifolia, is a charming succulent that is native to southeastern Africa, including southern Mozambique, Swaziland, and the KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. This plant forms large rosettes of triangular to ovate-lanceolate leaves, which can be 5-6 cm in diameter. The leaves are typically light to very dark green, but they can also have a brownish-green coloration. They are opaque and scabrid, with shining white or concolorous, pronounced tubercles that often merge together into confluent transverse ridges. The ridges give the leaves a distinctive appearance that resembles a coarse file, which is why this plant is also known as the file leafed Haworthia or the Fairies Washboard.

The rosettes of Haworthiopsis limifolia are stemless, solitary, or slowly proliferating, and they can form clumps of up to 20 rosettes. This succulent is relatively fast-growing and can offset freely, forming small clusters quickly. During the summer months, it needs to be kept moist, but not overly wet. In the winter months, it should be watered only when the soil becomes completely dry to avoid root and stem rot. Haworthiopsis limifolia is a winter grower and is dormant in the hottest summer months.

This plant prefers a very porous potting mix to increase drainage and a non-acid soil. It needs light shade to shade, but it can also take full sun for part of the day. With some sun exposure, the leaves develop a nice reddish tint and remain compact. It is also relatively low maintenance and can be an excellent subject for the beginning succulent enthusiast.

In cultivation, several robust clones of Haworthiopsis limifolia have been selected and propagated, and a variegated form (Haworthia limifolia f. variegata) is also known and highly prized. Haworthiopsis limifolia can be propagated easily by removing offshoots or by leaf cuttings in spring or summer. It can make an excellent addition to any succulent garden, miniature garden, or as a houseplant on a windowsill or veranda.
