Pachyveria 'Red Dragonfly' is a striking hybrid succulent prized for its vivid pink stress colouring and sculptural, symmetrical rosettes. This cultivar sits at the intersection of two closely related genera—Pachyphytum and Echeveria—and is believed to be a cross between Pachyphytum compactum and Pachyveria ‘Angel’s Finger’. The resulting hybrid inherits the geometric leaf structure of P. compactum and the soft blush tones of Angel’s Finger, producing a unique plant that continues to generate naming confusion in cultivation circles.
Despite being widely circulated under the name Pachyphytum 'Red Dragonfly', the plant’s features—particularly its elongated, slightly flattened, pointed leaves and tendency toward intense pink coloration under sunlight or cold stress—align more closely with known Pachyveria traits. For this reason, Pachyveria 'Red Dragonfly' is considered the more botanically appropriate name, especially among hybrid collectors and enthusiasts.
Its compact, low-growing rosettes reach around 6–10 cm across and are formed from a spiral of glaucous grey-pink leaves. Under environmental stress—such as bright light or cooler temperatures—the foliage flushes deep pink to magenta, creating a dramatic colour contrast against its pastel base tones. Each leaf tapers gracefully to a soft point, a feature that distinguishes it from the rounder, more cylindrical leaves of Pachyveria 'Angel’s Finger'.
Pachyveria 'Red Dragonfly' thrives in bright, indirect light with some tolerance for partial shade and prefers free-draining soil. It is well suited to container culture, especially in areas with mild, frost-free winters typical of many Australian regions. As a hybrid, it requires minimal maintenance and offers year-round appeal with seasonal colour shifts that make it a favourite among succulent collectors looking for a splash of pink.
