Sedum hernandezii, also known as Green Turtles Eggs, is an eye-catching succulent native to the hill slopes of Mexico's Puebla region, where it thrives in oak forests at elevations around 2,500 metres. With its chubby, emerald green leaves arranged in whorls of five, this plant's unique appearance and crackle-like leaf texture make it a fascinating addition to gardens or indoor spaces.
Growing up to 15 cm tall, Sedum hernandezii features attractive, star-shaped flowers with five yellow petals. These flowers bloom in clusters at the end of the branches during winter and spring. The plant's leaves are particularly noteworthy, resembling a turtle's egg with their round shape and slight depression in the centre.
Caring for Sedum hernandezii is quite simple, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners. It prefers a location with full to partial sun and well-draining soil. Despite being drought-tolerant, regular watering during the growing season is beneficial. However, being cold-sensitive, it needs protection from frost and freezing temperatures.
In Australia's climate, this low-maintenance, shrubby succulent can be a great addition to rock gardens, fairy gardens, or small containers. Its slow growth and compact habit add to its charm, without demanding excessive care. Whether planted indoors or outdoors, Sedum hernandezii's unique attributes make it an intriguing choice for those looking to enhance their surroundings with a touch of nature's creativity.
