Aeonium Mardi Gras is a beautiful and colorful succulent that is highly sought after by collectors and gardeners alike. This compact and small growing hybrid is a cross between Aeonium ‘Velour’ and an unnamed hybrid, resulting in a festival of color that changes throughout the seasons in tones of lemon yellow, emerald green, pink, and rich burgundy. The leaves of this plant display an amazing variegation which is lime green, cream, and burgundy red, with the red coming and going based on the seasons and sun exposure.
The 'Mardi Gras' succulent is easy to grow and look after, but it's best suited to growing in a pot. It can withstand poor soil and a range of temperatures but is not frost hardy and will freeze and die if frost settles on the leaves. For best results, grow it in morning sun followed by afternoon shade, especially during hot summers, though it can also be grown in full sun and bright shade.
Aeonium Mardi Gras is a medium-sized shrub with the main stem branching out and ending in a rosette type arrangement. Each rosette can measure up to over 15 cm across, depending on the conditions it's grown in. Young rosettes form in a circle around more mature rosettes and eventually branch out, creating a small tree look.
Propagation is easy with this plant as it readily produces pups, and the best time to propagate is in early spring. Cuttings of offsets can be planted directly in the garden or in succulent potting mix in a pot, and roots should appear in 3-4 weeks. Aeonium Mardi Gras does not have the ability to grow from leaves, and seed propagation can also prove difficult as the variegation may not be carried on to seedlings.
This plant is susceptible to mealy bugs and aphids, especially if grown in pots, so it should be regularly checked for pests. It is said to be deer resistant but may be eaten by possums if they are within their reach.
In summary, Aeonium Mardi Gras is a hardy and colorful succulent that is easy to grow and care for, making it an ideal addition to any garden or collection. Its variegated leaves and seasonal color changes make it a striking and unique plant that is sure to catch the eye of anyone who sees it.
