Aeonium Sedifolium, also known as Aeonium x lortei Tavormin, is a unique and fascinating succulent that originates from the Canary Islands. This plant is one of the smallest Aeoniums, growing to just over 20cm in ideal conditions over a period of 4 to 5 years. It makes a striking bonsai specimen, with its trunk and delicate arching branches thickening up over time, resembling a miniature prehistoric tree.
Unlike other Aeoniums, Sedifolium has tiny, sticky lime green leaves with striking red to crimson and burgundy markings on the leaf margins and stripes through the center. These markings and coloration continue to intensify during its growth spurt in late winter into spring, and throughout the summer season.
Aeonium Sedifolium is a small, densely branched succulent shrub with stems that bear small rosettes of glossy green to yellowish-green leaves with reddish stripes and many brownish lines near the apex. The rosettes are up to 1.2cm in diameter, and the leaves are ovate or obovate, up to 1.5cm long, 1cm wide, and 0.5cm thick. The star-shaped flowers, which appear in spring, are yellow and grow in clusters on up to 8cm tall stalks.
Growing Aeonium Sedifolium requires cool temperatures of 18 to 24°C during the winter to spring growing season, as they do not like hot or dry weather. In summer, they may go dormant and require little to no water. Overwatering or allowing them to sit in wet soil can cause root rot. A sandy loam or regular potting mix is recommended, and they should be fed with a half-strength balanced fertilizer every month during the growing season. This plant is hardy in Australia's warm temperate to tropical regions.
My favorite of all the Aeoniums. The only thing even more eye catching is the variegated form which also has a striking pink and cream variegation. Aeonium Sedifolium Variegated, also known as Aeonium x lortei Tavormin variegata, available HERE when in stock.
