Aeonium 'Shaohua'

Aeonium ‘Shaohua’ is a striking variegated Aeonium distinguished by an unusual progression of yellow-green, fresh green, pink, red and deep burgundy foliage within the same rosette. Originating in Chinese cultivation, this highly decorative cultivar is particularly prized for the way its variegation and colour develop as individual leaves mature.

A Rosette of Changing Colour

One of the most fascinating features of ‘Shaohua’ is the contrast between its younger and older foliage. New growth emerges through the centre of the rosette in fresh green to yellow-green tones, while the surrounding leaves gradually develop warmer pink, red and burgundy pigmentation. On strongly coloured plants, the oldest outer foliage can become an exceptionally deep burgundy to red-purple, appearing almost black in places.

This progression creates the beautiful layered effect visible in our plants, with a luminous green centre surrounded by increasingly dark rings of mature foliage. Individual leaves are broad and spoon-shaped, with gently pointed tips and fine hair-like cilia along the margins. Colour intensity will vary with season, light levels, temperature and growing conditions, so the same plant can present quite differently at various times of the year.

An Interesting & Uncertain Heritage

‘Shaohua’ is sometimes circulated under names including ‘Pink Witch Yellow Middle’ and ‘Pink Witch Middle Variegated’. It has often been described as a sport or mutation of Aeonium ‘Pink Witch’, although its exact horticultural lineage has not been conclusively established. Other accounts suggest that ‘Shaohua’ may instead have arisen directly from Aeonium ‘Blushing Beauty’, potentially making ‘Shaohua’ and ‘Pink Witch’ parallel mutations from the same cultivar rather than one being directly derived from the other.

Whatever its precise origin, ‘Shaohua’ is readily distinguished by its characteristic variegation and changing colour pattern, which gives mature rosettes a very different appearance from many of the better-known variegated Aeonium cultivars.

Growth & Form

‘Shaohua’ develops a branching, shrubby growth habit, producing rosettes at the ends of increasingly woody stems as it matures. Plants can reach around 30 cm tall under suitable conditions, while branching allows established specimens to develop multiple colourful rosettes and an attractive architectural form.

Its compact rosettes and branching habit make it particularly effective in pots, where the plant can be displayed individually and its changing foliage appreciated at close range. Older specimens can become impressive multi-headed plants while remaining manageable as container-grown succulents.

Growing Aeonium ‘Shaohua’

Grow ‘Shaohua’ in bright light to encourage compact growth and strong colour development, with protection from harsh afternoon summer sun during very hot Australian conditions. A free-draining succulent mix is essential, and plants should be watered thoroughly before allowing the growing medium to dry well between waterings.

Like many Aeonium cultivars, ‘Shaohua’ is generally more actively growing during the cooler part of the year and may slow considerably during hot summer weather. Changes in season and growing conditions are part of its appeal, with the balance between green, yellow, pink, red and burgundy continually evolving as the plant grows.
