Aeonium ‘Shaohua’ is a striking variegated form within the genus Aeonium (family Crassulaceae), believed to have arisen as a sport of the cultivar typically known as ‘Pink Witch’. Unlike ‘Pink Witch’, which displays a green mid-leaf and lighter margins, ‘Shaohua’ begins with a yellow mid-leaf on the new foliage and green outer edges, which gradually transform into deeper red-violet tones (almost black) on the leaf margins as the leaves mature. The intermediate stage often shows yellow at the base of semi-mature leaves, blending out into pink and orange hues toward the leaf tips and margins—ultimately fading the yellow entirely on older leaves, leaving primarily rich reds and pinks. What remains consistent with its parent is the branching habit, rosette growth form and woody stem structure, but the difference in variegation is visually quite striking and highly desirable to variegation collectors.

In cultivation you can expect this succulent to form multiple fleshy rosettes arranged on branching stems, eventually creating a small shrub-like habit. To maintain its vivid variegation and red-toned edges, bright light (including some direct sun) and cooler temperatures help intensify colouration. As with most Aeoniums, it thrives in free-draining succulent or cactus-mix soils and prefers to dry out between waterings. In Australia’s climate, it suits outdoor or protected position rather than prolonged frost-exposure—if grown in cooler regions, a sheltered spot or indoor pot placement will help.

From an interest-point of view, Aeonium ‘Shaohua’ offers more than just visual appeal: its development as a sport from ‘Pink Witch’ means each plant carries a unique variegation pattern, making it both a botanically fascinating and collector-worthy addition. Whether you display it as a standout specimen in its own pot, or as part of a mixed succulent arrangement, its evolving colours through growth stages ensure interest throughout the seasons. Care remains straightforward for any moderately experienced succulent enthusiast, and watching the yellow give way to vibrant pinks and deep red margins is part of the charm.
