Aeonium 'Velour'
Aeonium 'Velour' is a striking evergreen succulent prized for its velvety, jewel-toned rosettes that deepen to near-black in full sun. This eye-catching cultivar is a hybrid selection of Aeonium arboreum, bred for its richer pigmentation and more compact, branching growth habit. Unlike the tall, often leggy forms of typical Aeonium arboreum, ‘Velour’ develops a shrubby, well-branched structure with multiple rosettes perched on short, sturdy stems—ideal for gardeners who prefer a more architectural plant form.
Each rosette can reach up to 25 cm across, forming a tight, symmetrical whorl of spoon-shaped leaves. The foliage transitions in colour from lemon-lime on fresh growth to burgundy and deep purple as it matures, often with a distinctive green centre that adds extra dimension. The velvety surface of the leaves enhances the saturated tones, especially under strong light. In full sun or cool weather, the colours intensify dramatically, creating a dynamic presence in containers, raised beds, or rock gardens.
Aeonium 'Velour' typically grows to around 50 cm tall and wide, though mature clumps may extend up to 80 cm under ideal conditions. Like most Aeoniums, it enters dormancy in the heat of summer and grows actively during the cooler months. It thrives in free-draining soil and benefits from minimal watering—only when the soil is completely dry. Protection from frost is essential, especially in colder regions of Australia; in temperate zones, it does well outdoors year-round with occasional shelter during winter.
In late winter to spring, mature rosettes may produce showy clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers. Being monocarpic, the flowering rosette will die afterward, but healthy side shoots usually carry on, keeping the plant vibrant and full. Aeonium 'Velour' is ideal for adding contrast, colour, and form to mixed succulent arrangements or as a standalone feature in stylish containers.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
