Aeonium 'Blushing Beauty' Crest is the fascinating crested form of the well-known hybrid 'Blushing Beauty', replacing its conventional arrangement of individual rosettes with broad, irregular growing points carrying masses of closely packed leaves. As the crest develops, the growth can divide, curve and spread in different directions, producing an increasingly sculptural plant.
Seasonal Colour Across a Crested Form
The foliage retains the changing character associated with regular Aeonium 'Blushing Beauty'. Green can dominate during active growth, while bronze, burgundy, reddish and pink tones become more apparent according to season, temperature, light exposure and growing conditions.
In the crested plant these colours are distributed across a much more complex surface. Numerous leaves emerge along the broadened growing points, creating pockets and bands of contrasting colour rather than the orderly concentric pattern of a conventional rosette.
From a Classic Hybrid to Modern Variegation
The standard 'Blushing Beauty' was created by American hybridiser Jack Catlin from Aeonium canariense and 'Zwartkop' and has become an influential cultivar in its own right. It shares this parentage with the related cultivar 'Velour'.
It is also horticulturally connected with Aeonium 'Pink Witch', which is widely regarded by specialist growers as a variegated derivative or mutation of 'Blushing Beauty'. Growing 'Blushing Beauty' Crest
This crested Aeonium performs well in a free-draining succulent mix with bright light and good airflow. Its main growth period generally falls through the cooler months, with growth slowing during summer heat. Water according to growth and conditions, allowing the mix to dry appropriately between watering, and provide protection from severe afternoon summer sun where necessary.
Crested growth develops unpredictably, which is part of its appeal. Each specimen gradually forms its own arrangement of folds, branches and growing points, making mature plants particularly attractive as individual collector specimens and feature container plants.
